Jan 22, 2018 11:56 PM Mount Mayon volcano alert raised after ash and lava spill out. Eric Cheung This article is about the eruption of Mt. Mayon, which spread ash and lava in a radius of over a kilometer overnight. The ash spread outward from the mountain, spreading through the air at a height over 5 kilometers, and reducing the visibility of a nearby city, Guinobatan, to a zero. Many were shook awake in the seismic explosion, and saw the night sky in flames. Summarize in your own words the current event. (At least 7-10 full sentences) The town of Guinobatan, Albay, at 10:29 PM Jan 21, 2018, Mt Mayon erupted with a "Seismic explosion" that shook the town, causing 27,100 people to leave. 24,000 people have been displaced to evacuation centers across the province, while another 3,100 have moved to stay with relatives and friends. The ash spread up to five kilometers in the air, while the lava below spread to about a kilometer circumference. The ash raining down from the sky has been reported to have reduced visibility to a zero, causing schools in the area to close as a precautionary measure. Residents who remain are advised to wear face masks and remain indoors, according to Gov. Al Francis C. Bichara. Many people are thankful this was not a repetition of Mt. Mayon's fatal eruption in 1814, where near 1,200 people were killed. The island of Luzon has witnessed Mt. Mayon's destructive explosions 47 times since it's very first, in 616. The Mountain has killed people by the means of falling rocks, seismic activity causing buildings to fall around people, burning alive, ash inhalation ,and many other means. I wish the the citizens of the Mount Mayon eruption to stay safe, and be watchful of potential looters. Please keep your masks on when you are required to go outside, for food or other supplies, and above all, pay attention for any increasing evacuations, and begin to home school your children, as they will fall behind once the schools reopen.
